Description

8x10" paper sheet with art in Graphite and colored markers. Dick Grayson as Nightwing debuted in Tales Of The Titans #44, DC 1984. That issue was part of the legendary "Judas Contract" storyline. Cover date was July. This sketch is dated January 8, 1984, well before the general public would have any knowledge of the character. It is signed to "Roger." It is very possible that this was done for Roger Slifer who was an editor as DC at this time and would have had knowledge of Nightwing well before the rest of the world. What is most intriguing is this sketch closely matches the image of Nightwing that appears on pg. 22 of TOTT #44 in which he is shown descending a staircase. I unfortunately acquired this too late to ask either Roger or George and while I was able to reach Marv, he was not familiar with this at all. No matter what, as a lifelong fan of The New Teen Titans, and the character of Dick Grayson in general, this is an amazing piece to have in my collection.

The added color and similar pose/background composition is what takes this over the top. It's a pure Perez piece of the first Nightwing appearance without Giordano or DeCarlo. Fine piece of history during one of his prime periods.
