Published August 28, 1973. This piece was originally used as cover of TERRA #321 (Im Zeitkreis gefangen; Caught in the Time Circle) published on March 20, 1964. Real interesting how many changes were made. Does this mean it was painted over the original?

Yes, you are correct. Johnny Bruck painted over the original piece to adapt it for secondary use. You can also see changes he introduced for different printed editions, for example the Perry Rhodan series has 5 printed editions and for the 3rd and 5th editions the covers were often changed a bit. For the 5th edition there are also many extensions which were necessary due to a format change.
