DescriptionDOROTHY FLACK (1902-1989)All-Story Love Stories V8 #3 Nov. 29 cover, 1930 Pen and ink on board Image area 17.5 x 15.25 in. on a 23.5 x 32 in board. Signed lower right. From the Estate of Charles Martignette. Mrs. Flack was a rare woman artist working in pulps for many years. Looks a lot like something one might find in shoujo manga, yet also reminiscent of Nell Brinkley. Massive thanks to David Saunders for finding the microfilm copy of this cover in the library of congress. The 10-year mystery solved! Social/Sharing |

Wow, this is really quite stunning. It's not a field or genre' I collect, but I find the artwork extremely appealing. It may not be comicbook art, but there's no denying the quality of the illustration here. I really love the face on the brunette, especially the eyes. Just a wonderful piece, congratulations!

A lovely piece of 30s illustration. I chased this one a bit at auction. Glad it found an appreciative home.

Partly drawn to this by nostalgia from a bygone era. To stop there would shortchange this one. These gals are pure gorgeous and this intoxicating cover likely hypnotized the fellas at the news stand. It's the rare gems like this Flack cover that make my nightly scan of CAF so fun.

Now this is something you don't see too often. What are the chances something like this even surviving over the years? Just mind blowing detail to boot. You really have to tip the hat to such fine artists like Flack, their imaginations were off the charts. Such an amazing find.

Great illustration. It is very stylized and I see many elements in here that I see in many Manga artists. I love that stuff like this is still around. Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful! Delicate, feathery linework and those eyes are sublime! To die for!

Beautiful piece, I love finding stuff like this on CAF--wonderful art by an artist I'm not familiar with. Definitely see a Nell Brinkley parallel...

I think this is one of the best examples of Flack's art that I've seen. I'm not so fortunate to own any cover art to an issue of "All-Story, Combined with Munsey, Love Stories of the American Girl", but I do have an interior illustration from one. Have you asked your library to request the microfilm for the entire run under this title (1929-1931) from the Library of Congress? That's how I was able to get copies of the story my interior drawing was used in and the cover from the issue. LOC CALL NUMBER: Microfilm 38034.

i'm sure it's one of these missing gaps and your issue info matches the nov. 29th one. some of these were published in black & white. now it's just a matter of finding a copy! brian http://philsp.com/mags/all_story_love.html

This is such an eye-catching piece. The contrast with the colors and the eyes..soft and alluring. Light and dark. Very cool piece.

Wow, talking about a period piece. This is amazing not just for the artwork but for the era it came from. Congrats.

Very nice indeed! I've never read about Flack being a direct influence, but many of the stylistic flourishes I see here, including the large eyes and the sparkles, certainly became common shoujo manga tropes. I've read that certain American pen-and-ink artists from Flack's era were known influences (Brinkley, who looks to be an influence on Flack's work, and Ethel Hays are frequently cited as influences) so, it is certainly within the realm of possibility that her art inspired some of the shoujo artists in some form or fashion.

The great thing about CAF is there is so much art, that a wrong click is never a wrong turn and you find yourself in a gallery you've not seen before. And that gallery has a stunning vintage piece like this. I love the serendipitous art encounter scrolling sometimes brings.
