Description3-2025...From debut of Speedy's redesign and technically second appearance short (the first was "Cat-Tails for Two" but looked substantially different). The "Fastest Mouse in All Mexico" is the star of a carnival attraction, in this original production background painting from the Academy Award-winning cartoon directed by Friz Freleng, first released on 9/17/1955. The short also featured Sylvester as a cat-guard to a cheese factory that a group of mice want to get into; they hire Speedy Gonzales (in his first starring role with a redesigned look) to dash in and steal the tasty morsels for them. When Speedy proves to be impossible to catch, a frustrated Sylvester finally blows up all the cheese in the factory, inadvertently causing bits to rain down on the hungry mice; Speedy then delivers the classic closing line "I like this pussycat fellow; he's silly!" This great background painting is seen around the 1:56 mark, as the hungry mice approach the carnival Speedy is working at. The art is by Irv Wyner (1904 - 2002), signed in the lower left and painted in gouache with red ink on 2-peghole background board measuring approximately 13.75" x 10.25" with an image that covers most of the board. Congratulations. I watched this cartoon on the new Looney Tunes Collectors Vault BluRay. Irv Wyner is currently featured at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco. They displayed art from the Flintstones, the Jetsons, and Looney Tunes.

The tile roofs, the arches, and the roads all being a bit off center in this background painting bring about fond memories of the way the Looney Tunes shaped how we still think of exotic places and cultures.
