DescriptionEver since I picked up a copy of Sentinel in the late 70s, I've been a huge fan of Syd Mead, the amazing futurist who designed cars, boats, buildings, gadgets, and environments starting in the late 50s up until and after he started doing concept work for films such as Star Trek, Tron, Blade Runner, Aliens, 2010, etc. I was so tuned into this guy that I had already bought the Blade Runner Souvenir magazine before the movie was even released in theaters, and that film really delivered. It remains (tied with Alien) my favorite movie of all time.I love prelims and comprehensive sketches by most artists I admire, but with Mead, it's especially exciting since he was primarily a designer, and cars were his first and most important subject. Of course, I'd love to acquire one of his gorgeous finished gouache paintings, but I am delighted to have this pair of drawings in my collection. These two drawings were done in preparation for a 1985 painting of a Sport Sedan. I just discovered that these drawings were published in Studio Image 1, along with the finished painting (see attached images), where the credits say it was done for Rays Co., Ltd. I've also attached images of a full color prelim and the finished gouache painting, taken from the book Kronoteko. These are labeled as Sport Sedan (Rays Wheel) in that book. This may have been made into a Hot Wheels toy car design, but I'm not sure. Any info is appreciated! Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

It's really nice that he doesn't erase the excess lines that go over. It is if he wants us to know what shapes he used and how each curve and contour is there. As a designer, it is for the purpose of showing the person he hands it off to that has to build the 3D model. These exude the feeling of speed with their sharp wedge and low center of gravity.

Well, if you're going to acquire an original Syd Mead painting, how can you NOT get one of his car designs, right? Very cool, as his art always is. Great to see the simple yet beautiful lines here!

Wow! I love looking at his preliminary work, I feel like you can really see the skill in his draftsmanship better than the perfect finished pieces. Congratulations on a couple huge pick ups!
