DescriptionBrian Michael Bendis' Avengers Saga was truly epic! He worked with the greatest comic artists in the industry throughout, so I decided to try to collect a page from every artist to contribute interior art to Bendis' New Avengers, Avengers, and Dark Avengers. I am so thrilled to add this beautiful DPS by Mike Mayhew to my collection!! He is rightfully one of the preeminent modern cover artists, and his ink washes are truly thrilling to behold. This is such a great moment in the series, serving as a final adventure that mends a giant hole in the saga in my mind. Janet Van Dyne seemed to die at the conclusion of Secret Invasion, but here we find Tony Stark interrupting Hank Pym at work in his lab with a mystery: an anonymous antique Avengers distress signal. Check out the gallery of potential signal users' floating heads in the top panel of page 2 from left to right: The Vision, Spider-Man, Stingray, Colossus, Firestar, Thor, Black Knight, Squirrel Girl, The Beast, Patriot, Moon Knight, Namor, Scarlet Witch, Hercules, Captain Marvel, and Iron Fist. AS IF THAT WEREN'T ENOUGH AWESOME MARVEL HEROES, Bendis makes Mayhew draw (counterclockwise) The Fantastic Four, Mockingbird, Black Panther, Marvel Boy, Moondragon, Iron Man, Hellcat, Rage, Starfox, Hulk, and one more unknown person. If you think you know who that last possible Avenger is, please let me know!Social/Sharing |

Really cool with how Hank works with giant equipment! This microverse story brought back a founding member of the Avengers. Mayhew does a great tonal job for the faces as Hank seems annoyed, while Tony is upbeat as ever.

Another superb piece, Doc! Mike's black and white art is truly a wonder to behold; the rich shading and tones along with uncannily character accurate facial expressions make you forget all about any potential colored version... Gorgeous work. It also tickles me that the scientific gizmo (or is it a doo-dad?) that Hank is buckled into in that first (beautiful!) panel resembles a big microscope... which makes him look like Ant-Man, even at normal size. Love it! Another brilliant name to cross off the list of your inspiring collecting goal, sir! Mega congrats!!

Thank you so much, Jason! I love everything you mentioned about this piece, including the final panel where Tony says "Avengers are assembling." Ties together the series so well, considering they're going to rescue their teammate Janet!

Yeah! And I can't believe I didn't make a mention of all the cool "other Avengers" headshots that are floating around on page 2 here... The fact that they're in a style so different from how Tony and Hank are drawn sets up a fun layer to the page, as the reader separates the "living" from the projections (and pulls Tony and Hank's "real faces" more into the "real world"...). Really great page, sir!
