Description

The Swamp Thing #8 Cover by Mike Perkins.

For my time and money, no "big 2" series from the past 2 years has kept my interest/attention as much as THE SWAMP THING, written by Ram V and illustrated by Mike Perkins.

DC extended the original 10 issue Maxi series to a total of 16 issues and it's by far my favorite modern Swamp Thing run, and probably my 2nd favorite overall Swampy run after the Alan Moore run.

Time will tell how it's perceived long-term, but the artwork by Mike Perkins throughout is the best of his career IMHO - and as someone who absolutely loved this artwork and had a desire to collect it...it certainly helped when one of my good friends in the hobby happens to rep him.

HUGE Thank you to Ruben for not only this cover (and subsequently the complete issue, my first and only complete issue!) but for all of the artwork I've been able to grab from this series to add to my personal collection. I've been enjoying the art I own from the series personally for a while now, so it's time to share it with the CAF community.

I find this cover to be epic and stunning, even though by comparison it is simpler by concept and character appearances than the majority of the covers in the run. There's just something about it that I find very appealing, maybe because of the huge tree element. I also quite enjoy the final-colored published cover with the trade dress (additional images).

I was absolutely transfixed when I got to see this in person last month. Stunning work by Mike Perkins perfectly matching the ethereal mood we've all come to love about Swampy.

I'm in good company owning a complete issue from this run and even from the same 3 issue arc! May need your trade dress overlay skills eventually on the cover and word balloons ;-)

Sure, most people would prefer a standard, large as possible image of Swamp Thing coming towards you. That's the type of content that most collectors prefer. But what this cover may lack in mass appeal, is more than made up for from an artistic standpoint, as we're instead treated to a much more graphic representation of the character, more akin to a fine arts piece than a comic book illustration.

The overall concept and "double image" design is really quite brilliant, where we see the little Swamp Thing figure melded into the tree (screaming in pain?), growing outwardly along with it, but as you continue to stare at it, you then suddenly see there's also a large Swamp Thing face formed in the trunk of the tree. That is REALLY superb!

I don't want to lose
This Swamp Thing
That I've got 'cause if I do
I will surely, surely lose what's bought

'Cause this art's better
Than any art I know
It's Mike's cover inking
The swamp you have is frightening
I better wash, on wood, Kavi

Well, I just got my ink fix for me to head in to the weekend.

I'm sure the scans don't do it justice. Great acquisition Kavi!

Pareidolia is one of my favorite subjects to scope in art of any kind but expecially comics. In the Pacific NW where I'm from, we have a thing for trees. We see them as very much alive, as individuals, etc. This might be one of my all-time favorite Swamp Thing covers BECAUSE it doesnt have a huge, battle-action shot of our protagonist. It is truly an image that draws you in closer and closer until the inkwash sticks to your eyeballs like sap and you can't unsee it's haunting secrets.

Pareidolia is a great and rarely used word, Justin, kudos! However, unless I've been wrong all these years, I believe the word is used to describe the act of seeing things/images (usually in art) that aren't actually there. In other words, the artist drew one thing, but because of how the paint came off the brush (or in this case, ink), some of the shapes coalesce and can appear to form something recognizable like a face, an animal, etc. But in this case, Mike intentionally drew it so that you see 2 different Swamp Thing images.

By the way, that in the Pacific NW people have a thing for trees and see them as individuals, is very cool. The ARE living things, after all, and explains why so many people are understandably against deforestation.

BEAUTIFUL cover, Kavi!  Love the "double image", of course, but also how the black shadow patches (which are more anatomically accurate as eyes, as opposed to Swampy's "hands", as colored on the published cover?) are a more dire, skull-like pair of eyes to be an even taller and more imposing skull overlooking the proceedings.  Simply superb, awesome image.  Congrats on getting a full issue from this modern classic, and I can't wait to see the rest of the pages!

So impressive.  Must be a sight in person!  Perspective choice is perfect too, to highlight the grandeur of the tree and scene.  Congrats!

Wowza! What a surprising Swamp Thing cover by Mike Perkins! At first, I didn't get it--What's this cover with just a tree? Then, like one of those optical illusions where you don't see the picture at first and then it hits you like a ton of bricks, I saw it--The Swamp Thing trapped inside the tree, and he's screaming! It's one of those things you can't unsee once you've seen it.
