DescriptionHere is a recent pick up from Baltimore Comic Con. I’ve only recently discovered Jesse’s brilliant comics work thanks to fellow collectors and comics fans! I love his approach to panel layouts so when the chance for a commission arose I knew I wanted to ask him to add some of them behind a central pin up figure.Being that I have a soft spot for Frankenstein’s Monster I knew Jesse would be a perfect fit for the type of piece I had envisioned. The request was to have the Monster front and center with a grid layout behind him and in each panel, have elements depicting his creation. I pitched Jesse the idea and he told me this was a piece that was very much up his alley…and that was music to my ears. I knew I was in for a treat! There isn’t much I can say about the execution at all other that “WOW” I truly love what Jesse produced here, a true visual feast. The way that lightning bolt almost audibly crackles with energy, the mood setting background panels, having the Monster both in and out those panels as if he was stepping out and coming to life. It’s just brilliant. He also used a zip a tone like paper to add texture, shading & depth throughout. When he handed it to me I was very much speechless for a moment as I stared and took it in. I’ve since found some words for it, but I am also still very much find myself just staring at it every time I look at it. Social/Sharing |

This is just stupid good, Carl. That segmented history background is a wonderful vehicle to represent Frank - and him coming in and out of it is perfect!

Thanks André! I felt strongly it would be a great pairing of artist & subject matter & I thought his use of small panel storytelling would add something special to the whole thing but I wasn't prepared to be as blown away as I am! I just stared at it, said "Wow" and then proceeded to excitedly & gleefully giggle when he handed it to me. 😂

So great how Lonergan pieced this together just like Doctor Frankenstein added up all the different parts to create a creature that unexpectedly has a soul and a spirit of its own despite all the physical scars!

So true, that's a great way to put it Marcus! The patchwork storytelling through the panels just adds another layer of visually representing the creature's creation!

this came out really great man! I like the idea, specific but still open/loose enough for the artist to be as creative as possible within the framework you provided. the result is fantastic. and a great piece for October!

Thanks Kavi! That was very much my approach, give him the idea of what I was thinking, leaning into his storytelling strengths but in no way did I want to over direct. Just wanted him to take the idea and go cook! Cook he did!!

I've been a big fan of Frankenstein's monster since early childhood, when I caught a showing of the original 1931 film on television. So I like this piece just for that reason alone. But in this case, even my strong nostalgic feelings for the character ar absolutely buried by the sheer design and artistry of this piece. The amount of thinking that had to go into the design that he had in mind is mindboggling all on its own. An incredible piece and worthy of the "Piece of the week" award I now bestow upon you!

Thanks Rubén! I feel the exact same way, there is the nostalgic connection I have to the movie & then there is the appreciation I have for how Jesse executed this piece.
Even though there is that audience warning at the opening of the 1931 film addressing the horrors that will follow, it is very much a comfort watch for me!
So to see this character I have such a fond attachment to presented in this way, with all of Jesse's inspired design choices to represent the Monster's creation, it's just such a special and stunning addition to the collection!

Stunning commission, Carl.
Collecting commissions can be a gamble, but not if you're getting one from Jesse. You know it will be a homerun. This is fantastic. Even has a cameo of Abbie Normal.

Thanks Mike!
I tend to try to limit the commissions I request until the right combination of artist & subject matter hit me. The more I saw of Jesse's work, the more confident I was in the fact that he would produce something incredibly special here...and that he did!

He is such a masterful storyteller utilizing those small panels. The whole creation story is here, just brilliant!

The multi panel master takes a unique approach to a classic monster and it works. The end result is wonderful right down to the krackle.

I gladly paid him extra to bump this one to 11x17 to give him room to do his thing! I'd say money well spent! Fresh approach to a classic indeed!

Really outstanding! I was not previsouly familiar with Jesse's work, but I'm one of the photographers for the Baltimore Comic Con and stumbled onto his table while shooting. It was love at first sight. This Frankenstien piece is as perfect as it gets. I too puchaed a commission from him. While working the show I don't really have time to shop, but just had to have one of his brilliant pieces. I also went classic Universal Monster... The Creature From the Black Lagoon to be precise. I'll get around to posting it soon. In the meantime, congratuilations on this masterwork and thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for the kind words on this piece! Yeah, Jesse really hasn't been on my radar until this past year when I kept seeing some really amazing commissions as well as wonderful published examples! I'm definitely a fan now!! Congrats on the Creature piece, please let me know when you post it, I'm eager to see what he did!

I definitely had an AH-HA!! moment when I had this idea pop into my head. It just felt like a perfect request for Jesse! I also owe you a thank you, it was you sharing your piece from Jesse on your show with Bill that informed me of where Jesse was repped (bought a page that same night) & set me on my path to then make this request for Baltimore!

Wow. This captures all the elements I love about Jesse's work. Incredible compositions that are able to tell a full story on a single page. Kinetic Inks. Screen tones. All of it. Just brilliant. Amazing piece!
