Description

While the great Mike Mignola is known for a great many things, arguably my favorite of them all is The Amazing Screw-On Head, a character and story who existed brilliantly for one brief instant of perfection, and then vanished, never to be returned to.

Mike kept the original art from the one-shot and has commented that he had trouble drawing the character and didn't attempt him often. I'd only seen a few Mignola Screw-On Head pieces in the wild.

During the pandemic, Mike Mignola did an amazing series of pencil drawings that he sold off to raise money for the World Central Kitchen, and bundled into a book called The Quarantine Sketchbook.

For anyone following along as he was drawing these, you never knew what he was going to draw next, ranging from cereal mascots to He-Man to chess pieces! It was an incredibly fun spectator experience.

Along the way, Mike managed to fit in a couple of gorgeous pieces of Screw-On Head. This particular piece was my favorite of them all, and I anxiously awaited it appearing on eBay...but I never saw it! I have no idea whether I missed it or Mike kept it, but one day, 2 years later, it popped up on CL and was mine for relative peanuts! Woohoo!

While I still don't have a proper Hellboy piece, I feel like that's far easier to find than a great Screw-On Head piece :)

It's impressive because the Mignola Hellboy flat style gets into 3D territory with the flying fist attack. It even works like a real toy as the fist is already dipping with a disappointing short range.
