DescriptionNow usually, I don't add pieces to my CAF quickly after acquisition. My goal with my CAF is not to show off new pieces but try and be thoughtful as to the artwork and how it relates to my collecting ... whether style, nostalgia, or content. However, for this piece I will make an exception.I just bought this from Anthony and almost pulled the trigger back when it was shown on Dueling Dealers. It is a great digital image but is so much cooler in person. Now, as far as Conan goes, this is a second story featuring Kull instead of Conan. It is adapted from a Robert E. Howard story by Roy Thomas. However, there is nothing key about this story or issue. The art however ... The name David Wenzel does not come up a lot in comics ...only 105 entries in comics.org including foreign reprints. I actually had not come across any of his comic art before. However, back when I was a tween and my brother was in college, he bought an illustrated book for me written by Robb Walsh and illustrated by David Wenzel called Kingdom of the Dwarves (because of our shared love of fantasy and sci-fi). I think David was doing a signing at a bookstore in C. He added a signature and small drawing inside. I poured over this book again and again. No longer in mint condition but well read and loved. So this piece comes up on Dueling Dealers. Could it be the same artist? It was. After some hand wringing, I bought the piece, and the tones and texture are amazing! Social/Sharing |

A well remembered page from the show as the quality on video couldn't capture all the finer qualities, but still showed that it was artistically superior compared to many of the other pieces. Wenzel also had a nice run in Avengers, but found more success outside of comics. So definitley a treat whenever we see his comics artwork.

As a fan of Bary Windsor-Smith work, I always thought it was a gas to see other artists so inspired by his work that they chose to emulate his style as best they could. Tim Conrad was the one who employed the BWS style more often than anyone, but as we can see here, even David Wenzel got in on it too and did it brilliantly! It's funny, I first noticed Wenzel's work as a fill in artist in some 70's Marvel comics which I discovered as back issues during the early 80's, but then forgot about him until that prestige format adaptation of The Hobbit was published in the late 80's, which was also very impressively done. Congrats on this acquisition, man, it's a beaut!

This is one of those 'can't look, can't look away' pieces. Doubly compelling precisely because the horror of the scene can't be dispelled easily as a mere supernatural illusion. I don't think there's anything more horrific than the reality of human atrocity. Dracula, the mummy, zombies all make me laugh. But gas chambers, human sacrifice and the thought of dark web cannibals out there scare the living be-jesus out of me!
An incredibly powerful if utterly horrific piece.

It's only rumor, but I heard the envelope for the printer was mis-addressed and 3 members of the Comics Code Authority had to be treated at the scene after opening it.
Amazing detail, though. Wow!
