DescriptionSpecial thanks to Wally for the opportunity to pick up this unique piece of Superman history - in 1996, on the heels of the 1st Marvel Masterpiece card series, Joe Jusko was scheduled to release an entirely painted Superman trading card set with Skybox. Unfortunately the set was canceled in 1995 when Marvel purchased Skybox. I have not seen images of many of these cards released, and it's not clear how far into the set Jusko completed work. I believe this card may have been published in one of the later Jusko Art books, but it's a bittersweet example of what might have been had that entire set been published. This piece was titled "Superman the Gladiator" and was part of an Elseworlds sequence within the set. This checked a lot of boxes for me as it's a great example of painted work from Joe, a long lost look into this abandoned card set, and another take on the post-Return Super mullet. If anyone has seen other examples from this set, please let us know below!https://www.kandorarchives.com/p/skybox-all-joe-jusko.html Social/Sharing |

Awesome for a previously unseen gem! The Superman costume colors are comic book strong over the more realistically and classically lit backgrounds.

Such a cool time-capsule piece !! Love Superman's look of that era and Jusko did him great justice !

Thanks, totally agree - it would have been amazing to see an entirely painted Jusko Superman card set.
