Description

I know that there are lots of Legion of Super Hero fans out there. Although I grew up reading DC comics as well, once I was hooked on Marvel comics, that became more or less my staple fare and I never did read any LSH books with any regularity. However, having explored more LOSH books and stories in more recent times, I can understand why there is such a following of such proportions for the team. As a collector of original comic art, though, I was still unwilling to go the extra mile for LOSH art - until this piece came along. In addition to nostalgia, I am also drawn to the aesthetics of certain pieces. And this was certainly one of them. In particular, I could not resist the fact that there was the entire Legion team collected into one huge panel. The artwork itself is somewhat oversized as it was, I think, created for a tabloid-sized publication (I must confess that I never read this story, but this fact is confirmed at the top lefthand side of the artwork itself). As I was looking for just one representative piece of LOSH art, this fit the bill for me perfectly.

There was also added incentive inasmuch as I had not (believe it or not) purchased any Mike Grell artwork even though I have been a collector for many years. Indeed, I have long admired his work and it defies imagination that I hadn't obtained any of his artwork until the present. Oh yes, there are Vinnie inks. However, I think that he did a pretty good job here. The actual figures of the Legion team are very small so you cannot blame him for not getting in more detail (which would not have reproduced properly in any event when the book was published (this is not unlike the Spidey faces which Ditko would not "web up" if the actual figure was too tiny)) - at least we must be grateful that the detail is such that I am sure he did not erase any of the figures!

And as Marcus astutely observed and also reminded me, Vinnie loved the ladies and drew some really pretty ones in his time. And he appeared to spare no effort in his inks on this particular piece!

Every one of the close ups are so 70's handsome and beautiful.  Dream Girl definitely lives up to her moniker.  Grell and Colletta knew this larger format was going to be poured over and didn't mess around.

Many thanks, as always, Marcus!  And, yes, Vinnie loved the ladies and drew some really pretty ones too in his time!

I'm in the exact same boat as you regarding Grell LOSH art but can easily see why this would set your heart aflutter ;)

Congrats!

Fun page and loved reading the collecting background on this piece. If it makes you feel any better, I think Grell is great and I still haven't picked up anything by him to add to my collection. Congrats again!

Many thanks, Dewey!  As mentioned, this will probably be my only LOSH page but, hopefully, not my last Grell piece of artwork.

Many thanks, Aidan.  What an appropriate monicker!  I must confess that I am still not as crazy as you and your compatriots but, as mentioned, have a better understanding of where you are all coming from.

I loved your collection. It has great pages from my childhood memories. I will most certainly be following your gallery. My only exception to my Legion collection is hunting pages from my first ever comic Avenger 26   Your first comic is always special   Happy collecting

Many thanks, Aidan.  I guess the Avengers are to me as the Legion are to you (with the exception of Avengers #26).  Although it was the briefest of stints, I really loved the Wood inks over the Heck pencils on the Avengers.

My apologies, Aidan.  I had forgotten to thank you for taking the time and trouble to comment on artwork in my CAF Gallery.

While I'm not altogether surprised that this is your first Legion page, I have to admit to being a bit surprised that this is also in fact your very first Mike Grell page. Mind you, Grell was primarily a DC artist throughout his career, so I suppose that also makes sense. Either way, I have to say you'd be hard pressed to find a better Legion example if you're looking to be "one and done".

I like the Dream Girl sequence, but like yourself, finding a page with a panel large enough to hold 23 Legionnaires sitting at the table is the real coup. Your point about why those figures are not very detailed is spot on. But regardless, the wonderful thing about the panel is that in spite of the characters' sizes, you can still immediately recognize each and every Legionnaire!

Many thanks, Rubén!  It is indeed "one and done", especially since I did pull out the financial stops to obtain this page.  It is a wonderful and, in many ways, unique page indeed.

Thanks so much, Nick!  As mentioned, having all the Legionnaires on one page (and, as Rubén pointed out, still clearly identifable individually) was the main attraction for me insofar as this page was concerned.

I'll use my telepathy to figure this out. Ok Dream girl, lie back close your eyes. You will sleep better if you lay back in a seductive position. Dream. Dream. Ok good. Now Superboy, I'll read your thoug... Superboy!!! Control yourself. And why are their farm animals?

Thanks, John!  Good thing I was concentrating on the first panel!

I do have fond memories of this tabloid-size adventure of the Legion. The enlarged format allowed for spectacular scenes in which, of course, Mike Grell excelled! And when it comes to close-ups, well, it's even more spectacular! Great page, of course!

Many thanks, Al!  As mentioned, I didn't have the privilege of reading this particular tabloid-size story but hope to one day soon.

WOW, CAB - now THAT'S a Legion page!  It seems you've created a safe space for true confessions here, so I'll take advantage of that to chip in here that I never really read any Legion until recently.  I always knew I was missing something, certainly... it just seemed like "a lot".  This piece, though, really spotlights the glory of it all, though, when it really looks to be firing on all cylinders.  An enormous (and beautifully drawn) assemblage of unique and exciting heroes, and I really like the structure of the layout: simple, but really solid - effective and classic.  Great pick up, CAB!  Congrats on your New (page) 52!  (I hope you had a terrific holidays!)

Thanks very much, Jason!  I am so relieved that I am not the only person who came late to the party, so to speak.  A very detailed and insightful analysis, as always.  Wishing you and the family a wonderful Holiday Season too!
