DescriptionThis is the first piece of original art I purchased from Don Rosa. Acquiring an original drawing by him was a dream of mine since I was 12 years old. In 2004 when the story "A Letter from Home" was published, I was one of the first people to discover the secret message that Don had included in his cover art for the story. The encrypted letter Scrooge was holding stated that the first person to contact Don would receive an original drawing from him. I wasn't quite the first person, but Don still responded to my e-mail and graciously sent me a signed picture of him in his study.Fifteen years later, I still dreamt of an original drawing by Don. I eventually found out about the "Official Don Rosa Group" on Facebook and the possibility of requesting a commission from him. Jano Rohleder (who manages the group) stressed in a post that Don wanted EXACT instructions for what his commissions should depict. I thought about an idea of an alternative Klondike portrait of Scrooge; perhaps the photographer who took the Klondike portrait we're familiar with also took another picture? In order to be exact, I drew up a sketch of my own and sent it to Don Rosa's art dealer for reference as instructed. Half a year later, some fans from France made a Facebook post about their visit to Don's home and shared some pictures. The pictures depicted Don's study and sure enough, my half-drawn commission could be seen laying on the drawing table. What's more, I could clearly tell that MY sketch was placed beside Don's drawing. For some reason, I hadn't quite pictured Don Rosa actually placing our drawings side by side for reference. Needless to say, I felt pretty humbled by this; the picture I had received 15 years earlier showed Don sitting at that same table. Now Don was working there on a drawing based on my sketch. It took another few months before I was notified about my commission being ready. Now that drawing hangs on my wall together with the picture I received as a child. :) Social/Sharing |
