DescriptionStep by Bloody Step is a title I only heard about from the Felix Comic Art newsletter, and it might be my favorite new title of 2022. Basically, it's about the journey of a little girl and a robot, but there is (essentially) no dialogue, so all the storytelling is done through the art by Matías Bergara. The art for the first issue dropped (and sold out) before I had a chance to read it, but once I did, I fell in love and wanted to pick up something from the series. There were a few pages in this issue that I wanted to go for, but this page stood out to me among the others (and given the competition, I figured I should just go for one page). It has some nice action, fantastic linework, and great sequential storytelling. There's the big splashy (literally) panel at the top as the robot crashes out of the water, then we watch as the girl is hurt by a stray shot. From there, we follow the path of a drop of her blood into the water, where it triggers a frenzied reaction in the girl inside the robot suit. That last panel is my favorite part of the page- the robot suit in silhouette, the expression on her face (with those eyes!), and all the frenetic energy lines. The published version takes it to another level with the coloring and background effects, but this is one of my favorite images from the whole series, and I'm really glad I was able to pick this up. Thanks, Felix! Social/Sharing |

Without words, Bergara had to connect instantly with the audience and hold them by connecting to emotions though clever storytelling. The panels funnel that drop of blood and the ripple effect is the frenzied madness like shattered glass in her psyche.

I think this page is pretty key in establishing the giant's destructive power and what cues it. If you didn't "get it" from issue 1, you couldn't miss it here. And the blood in the water underlined the connection to the natural world the two characters share. Great addition, and great eye for the right page, as always.
