DescriptionIC3 Pre-Show Commission!!!In the build up to IC3, I saw several commissions that Ian had done for other CAF folks and I decided that I needed to get in on the action. It was absolutely the right decision as this piece completely blew me away! Ian also provided a very interactive commission experience which made me feel like a (small) part of the process. He started by asking me if I had any favorite images of Stingray I could show him for reference so I advised him to browse my Instagram account. A couple of days later he sent me SIX small preliminary thumbnails and asked me to pick my favorite. I felt the pressure and gave them all a look but managed to narrow it down to one choice. When I revealed my selection Ian said, "Good, that's the one I most wanted to do". SUCCESS! From there I received a scan of the pencils, and then the inks, and then the finished piece. I was awestruck each time. The attention to detail in this piece is astounding. Ian really focused in on drawing realistic anatomy both on the figure of Stingray, and each of the individual creatures in the background. This feels like something out of a biology text book. Even the smaller rays in the distance get the same treatment. And then there's the colors. When Ian first brought up the colors to me, he said that he though Stingray should have bright colors and the background should have muted color to help make the figure pop. I imagined that the rays would all be one color, a dull reddish brown or something. I certainly was not expecting each ray to be colored individually. Nor did I expect some of the rays to have multiple colors or gradients. Conceptually, this piece just makes sense: Stingray swimming with a fever of stingrays. Simple enough, but no one has attempted it in a commission for me before, maybe because it seemed too obvious? Either way, Ian managed to elevate this "simple" concept with a stunning composition. The symmetrical figure in front of the asymmetrical field of stingrays makes the figure stand out. The way the rays in the background form an almost geometric pattern is so damn cool!! It's like some kind of colorful art nouveau wallpaper!! Bonus: the red on Stingray's costume glows under black light! Pencils, inks, and acrylics on 11x17 board. Ian Cinco is currently working on his creator owned indie book, 'Neon Spring'. He also has an art book, 'Erratica v1: Shift of Essence'. the plethora of rays in the background just make this piece so cool and unique. the main figure Stingray looks good too. sounds like a collaborative and friendly process with the artist for the commission as well. congrats on the result

The blacklight so cool and appropriate. If you have an aquarium with that lighting, the fishes would have that fluorescent look in the dark.

I couldn't agree more. I told Ian when I met him that this one immediately jumps into the top 5 of my Stingray commissions.

The vertical ray background is stunning and works so well with the character in the foreground. Love the character pose here as well and the end result in color, is a cover quality take. Big congrats on this, it's an absolute beauty!

I know it doesn't have the optical effect, but in a weird way it reminds of M.C Escher's "Sky and Water." Regardless, it is fascinating in its own right for its own reasons, and I dig the black light effect.
