DescriptionThis week, my theme is pages from Ultimate Spider-Man!And I have decided to start at the end of Mark Bagley's historic 111-issue run, with this beautifully penciled cover from a story called "The Talk." In this issue, Peter and Aunt May deal with the aftermath of Aunt May learning that her nephew is Spider-Man, and her ensuing heart attack. They basically sit down and have a very long and heartfelt conversation, where Peter lays all his cards on the table, Aunt May gets to ask all kinds of questions, and the end result is a beautiful moment of acceptance on May's part and vast relief for both. It's a wonderful issue, and I just love this cover. Thanks for looking! Social/Sharing |

Emotive cover, for sure, both in terms of the expressions on Pete and May but also in terms of the the overal composition, with the large Spider-Man standing there as a sort of barrier between Pete and May. You know this'll be a read to pull at the heart strings. Congrats, Paul - looking forwatd to seeing more from Ultimate Spidey week!

Oh man, that's a beauty. I love the tight, scratchy pencil rendering. So gorgeous!

I dig how Spidey is standing between them, but also holding them from going too far apart with those detailed hands "corralling" them. What a strongly emotive cover, that perfectly supports the scene. This concept could have been done by either Romita or Ditko--It's so strongly in the Spidey tradition. Awesome cover, Paul! Big congrats!

I never understood how that bit of knowledge gave her a heart attack but she got her freak on with a guy with 8 arms and had no issue. I'm thinking Aunt May is the real tiger.

Bagley's pencils are so wonderful. Good to see some pieces without inks, ever if Mark got some of the best artists for the job.

So good, my friend... SO GOOD! J H hit the nail right on the head when he said it was reminiscent of a Romita or Ditko cover... My first thought when I saw this was of ASM # 87; a similar cover composition for the story 'Unmasked At Last!" I LOVE it when awesome powerhouse artists subtly reference the past titans like that!
And what a beautiful cover this is - dripping with possibility and leaving the readers desperate to pick it up and find out what's going on. Which I am going to go do shortly after posting this. :) Another wonderful addition, Paul! Congrats!

wow, what a great "final issue" this was. it was really a perfect send off for Bagley on the run, and even though he would return later after Immonen picked up the ball and ran with it...there really was something super special about that 111 issue record breaking consecutive run for that 8 year period. We don't see that in the modern era anymore. Awesome cover!
