DescriptionJaime Hernandez is one of my favorite artists and storytellers of all-time, and it was a privilege and honor to add this piece to my collection. I'm fortunate to own several OA pieces by Jaime, and this is my favorite singular piece of his in my collection. All Jaime art is beautiful, and my favorite period is early Love & Rockets. I'm not sure why: maybe these early stories were the ones that hooked me; maybe its the larger paper size; maybe it's the Punk Rock vibe; maybe it's the heavy rendering; or maybe it's something else? The composition, variety, depth, and layout of this piece checked a lot of boxes. While it would be great to have Maggie and Hopey rendered in detail on the page, both characters feel present on this page (Maggie and Rena in the pitch black tunnels and Hopey invoked by Penny and Izzy), even if you can't see either of them. Since the majority of The Local stories are told from Maggie's perspective, it's powerful to witness what Izzy and Penny think and say about Maggie, Hopey, and their relationship during a quiet moment when neither are present. I adore how the pitch black upper panels depicting Rena & Maggie on the run and lost in sewer tunnels are separated from Izzy and Penny by the "MECHANICS" title. Izzy and Penny are lovingly rendered in this 3/4 splash in the foreground against the backdrop of their kitchen apartment and the shadows and outlines of objects in the adjoining room. Whether intentional or not, I like to think Izzy wielding a flyswatter is foreshadowing her backstory from "Flies on The Ceiling" or at least the theme(s) of occult, superstition, and Magical Realism associated with her character. Makes me wonder if Izzy ever visited Palomar. Much gratitude and appreciation to Jaime for the joy his stories and artwork bring to my life. Social/Sharing |

Very lovely how it's all put together in order to pace the opening of the story. An impatient reader may want to skip the top, but Jaime does it to slow things down from how we typically read a superhero book and make us apprecaite the fine work in the opening establishing image.

Haha! Amazing! No wonder I thought she could have been a Palomar character! Always appreciate your Love & Rockets knowledge!

Fantastic page. I love all of the little details, from Zero's phone number of the cupboard to the Sal's Liquor calendar, to the title lettering and of course, the great splash. Congrats on getting this amazing page.

Thanks for highlighting these subtle details! It's great to see how each one really enlivens the space, the characters, their relationships, and setting. Curious what folks make of Zero's number being written on the cupboard? Who do you think wrote it on Izzy'd cupboard?

Brilliant. It's odd to say that a simple flyswatter rendered so perfectly speak absolute volumes about the environment and situation we are experiencing, but Jaime is a genius so there we have it.

Thanks ML! Curious to read your volumes on what the flyswatter says about the environment and situation we're experiencing. Couldn't agree more with your assessment of Jaime!
