Description

This is a milestone piece for me. I could probably quit collecting with this piece and be content that I achieved all my major collecting goals. Sure, a few new ones have come up and are still on the list but this is the last big one for me. By no means am I finished collecting but I will be entering a different stage and I curious how that will effect the look of my collection.

First of all, why Krazy Kat? I am far too inarticulate to really do his topic justice but others have and I think that is sufficient to say that Herriman was a literary genius the likes we are unlikely to ever see again and he chose sequential art as his medium. Krazy Kat transcends comic art and dives into much deeper and funner themes while constantly challenging the reader both verbally and visually. The love-hate relationship between Krazy and Ignatz and the interloping Officer Pupp are among the vocabulary that Herriman used to tell tales, jokes and experiment with the greatness sequential art can aspire too.

This particular Sunday falls on boxing day 1920, almost 100 years ago. It features all the main players plus many of the secondary characters including the ever-changing Coconino County backdrop. Fun dialogue and a great last panel of Krazy and I love how animated Ignatz is in the final tier. 1920 is a good vintage for Krazy Kats. I have owned several dailies over the years but this is my first Sunday and as cool as the dailies are, Krazy Kat is about the Sundays.

One last thing that adds to this piece. I was born in Fiji but we immigrated to Canada when I was 4. I was on vacation when this auction came up. I won this piece sitting on the deck before 6 am in Fiji on the phone with Heritage. It is the first time I have been back in over 30 years and in addition to the homecoming, I will forever have this piece and this view tied with my memories of that trip. Below is a picture of me bidding and watching the Heritage Auctions.

Great page! And I am also one of those people, who wakes himself up at 3 o'clock in the morning to bid on something (and who is the whole day destroyed when the bidding wasn't successful because some guys who are sitting very relaxed at the other end of the world on a pool bidding the hell out of me and my budget ;) ). Again: Extraordinary page of a great artist from a great period of this artist! Congratulations!

Whenever one lands a long-sought-after piece it is a real accomplishment for someone who has been in the hobby for as long as you Jeff. My hearty congratulations - and I love the Krazy Fiji connection!

As someone who came to terms with the fact that I would (in all likelihood) never acquire "the last big one" (i.e. attain all my major collecting goals), I still can catch a vicarious thrill when someone I like and admire manages the feat (and cheers for managing to do it in such "chillax" style).

Stunningly gorgeous Krazy Kat Sunday page. This is George Herriman at his absolute best! The storylines are complex yet hilarious. The art is simple and yet complex. The humor is cornball, but subtle. It's Krazy!
