DescriptionI dabble in fine art photography with a mystical/magical bent (see my listings for Simon Marsden). In 1993, photographer Jack Leigh (1948-2004) was commissioned to provide a cover photo for a new book called Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. He found his inspiration in Savannah’s gorgeous Bonaventure Cemetery, creating one of the most famous photographic images of the latter twentieth century. John Berendt’s book, a supernaturally tinged “nonfiction novel” concerning murder and scandal in Savannah, became an excellent film by Clint Eastwood — and later led me to discover what is perhaps my favorite town in the world. The movie, incidentally, essentially duplicated Leigh’s photo for the one-sheet without credit or compensation; Leigh sued, unsuccessfully. The statue itself, these days usually called Bird Girl, was sculpted by Sylvia Shaw Judson in 1936 in an edition of six. The Bonaventure copy was, sadly but probably wisely, moved from the cemetery when Midnight Mania hit Savannah. She now resides in the Telfair Academy, where she is definitely the most popular exhibit. Social/Sharing |

It captures the southern gothic noir feel very well. If now moved, it's a moment in time now lost, making this even more rare of an image.

Beautiful image. Even if it was plagiarized, it's still one of the rare instances when the book cover was also used for the movie poster. The others that come to mind are MASH and Jaws. I'm a big fan of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, it's so cool that they cast a lot of people that knew Jim Williams. Savannah seems like such a great town.

It really is! I love that book a lot and the movie as well, even though it departs from the truth even more than the "nonfiction novel." Spacey even looks like Williams, although he's about two feet shorter. ;-)
