Description

While I like many of the various costumes and armor designs for Thor, I decided to draw him in his original, early design, which is what he wore when I was first introduced to the character.

I tried to incorporate some of the stoicism and brutality that come to mind when I think of ancient gods. The ancient pantheons were not heroic in the sense we typically understand the word today; they were creatures of appetite, rage, lust, pride, and so on.

In ancient lore, physical weakness, especially among men, was held in contempt and was, to a degree, associated with weakness of character. A man's ability to inflict violence upon others, especially in the Norse mythos, was revered. Carl Jung suggested that this aggrandizement of violence may have played a role in the collective psychology of the Germanic people in the last century...

In his 1936 essay "Wotan," Carl Jung analyzed the role of the Germanic god Odin (Wotan) as an archetype deeply embedded in the German collective unconscious. He believed that the archetype had become active, impacting the German people and particularly their current situation, including the rise of Nazism. Jung saw Wotan's manifestation as a powerful, disruptive force, potentially leading to societal upheaval."

In any case, my vision of Thor lusts for violence and adventure, to die in battle and enter the realm of Valhalla; he's not your drinking buddy or the "dude-bro" Thor popularized in the Marvel movies.
