DescriptionHappy (belated) birthday to Our Pal Sal Buscema! I planned to post this on Sal’s birthday on 1/26 but was under the weather and not on CAF for a bit.And what better piece of art to be able to post for my favorite artist’s birthday, than a page from my first and favorite Hulk issue – 227. Just look at those gorgeous Klaus Janson inks over Sal’s pencils! Hulk 227 was my first Hulk issue pulled from the spinner rack and completely captured the imagination of my youthful mind from the first (of many) readings of the issue. The art was fantastic, the story was unique and enthralling – the perfect issue! This page captures the conversation where the gamma-powered psychiatrist Doc Samson and Bruce Banner discuss Doc’s plan to get Hulk on the “couch” for some analysis to help confront him with his own humanity. Doc’s plan? A calibrated dose of GAMMA-EPINEPHRINE to try and keep Hulk calm during the session - talk about a tall task! And who doesn’t love a page with Kropotkin the great (maybe not many others, but I do!) I am extremely fortunate to be able to add my third page from this issue, especially as this page precedes one of my other pages (a great transformation page here ). If you are aware of any pages from this issue not already on CAF, please consider reaching out to me as I would love to see it and purchase if available (would love to see even if not for sale). If you’d like to see the other 227 pages, see below for links - and thanks for taking your time to view the art in my gallery! Page 3 Page 6 Page Page 10 Social/Sharing |

Your excitement about grabbing another great page from your favorite issue is wonderful to experience and also quite infectious. It's why I love this hobby so much. Major congrats!

The page leans into the fantastical with Doc Sampson's belief that the Hulk can be controlled and the presence of Kropotkin the great. It was playing to the psychoanalysis angle that was popularized in 70's media and a valid course for the character inspired by Jekyll and Hyde. Sal and Klaus puts sincerity into their efforts for us to relate to Bruce and in turn Hulk.

Awesome page and story, thrilled it's in your collection Dave! I wish I could remember my first book (not even sure if it's a Hulk title to be honest), but I will make sure to keep an eye out for #227 pages.

Thanks gammabro! And thanks for looking out for 227 pages!
Maybe a Thor book was your first?

Haha, I think it had to be Spidey or X-Men in the folly of my youth. As I matured, the gamma became more appealing!

Now we're talking. Buscema run. Personal meaning. Not the first page you have from the issue. The Jade Giant in true form baby!

Great page! I love Janson's inks from the late 70's! Is there any other art hidden under that 3rd panel?

Yes, there is! I couldn't resist and took a peak and found a hand in blue pencil

Analyze the Hulk? That'll be the day. Imagine Hulk being asked, "And how did that make you feel?" Hulk'd go, "HULK SMASH!" And that would be that.

Very cool Incredible Hulk page by Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson! Sal was such a great storyteller and this page is no exception. And Klaus Janson's inks really suited Sal's pencils perfectly. Great pick-up!
