Description

What is a grail in our hobby? Some say it is a singular image, a page, the absolute pinnacle of what they most cherish … there can be only one! For me, it is Hulk issue 227 – the entire issue – each and every page. Can an issue be your grail? debate amongst yourselves ;)

Adding another page from this issue means a lot and I am forever grateful for each and every page that finds its way into my collection.

This page is number 4 in the grail hunt and amazingly, it combines with my other pages to complete an amazing 4 page sequence from the book! Talk about fortuitous! Sal and Klaus combine to create beautiful artwork in this issue – the only issue they worked on together in the Hulk run (although you can find plenty of Hulk art from this duo in the issues of Defenders). In this page, Doc Samson is able to transport the Hulk into a dream state in order to study the Jade Giant’s inner psyche … and they are suddenly in a very different place …

Major thanks to all who have helped along this quest journey – it is appreciated more than you know. Below are links to the pages in the sequence in case you would like to view them all. I have also included images of the art and published pages to show the sequence in one shot visually.

And lastly – please feel free to reach out if you are aware of any other pages from Hulk 227 as I am always interested in seeing more great art from the issue. Thanks!

such an awesome piece of art!   Wish Sal and Klaus did more Hulk issues together.  The fact that you have four pages in a row from a book from 1978 is, dare I say it, Incredible!!

A grail can be anything you want it to be.  And how exciting for you to add another page from yours, PLUS it completes a four page sequence.  The universe just seems to snap into place when you can do something like that.  This is an awesome page, and I'm so happy for you!

Thanks Paul! And yes, if I had the Infinity Gauntlet, I would snap all the Hulk 227 pages into my collection!

The mental anguish in the back of your mind relieved with every page acquired!  Great TV era of Hulk, the rise of psychiatry in popular culture also happened during that time.

Thanks Marcus! Reading the great issues in Sal's run and watching the TV show certainly set the bar high for this young fledgling Hulk fan!

Thanks Carlo - I agree with you in my very biased perspective. If not the best Sal/Kalus colaboration, certainly my favorite.

Thanks Chris - I bet you especially liked that Hulk's dream world includes his ol pal Ben being turned into a barcalounger ;)

I definetely support you on your quest to assemble Hulk 227! Tough job but you love for the Green Powerhouse will give you the energy needed!  To me Sal is the most iconic artist on that run!! Nobody draws HULK like him!
