Description23”x31” (frame 26”x34”) Painted in 1978; purchased in 2023. Originally published as the back cover to the October 1978 issue of Heavy Metal magazine. I had contacted Doug soon after purchasing Beyond Wizardwall and we discussed this piece, which I passed on at the time, but came to my senses and we recently made a deal.Doug told me that the model for this piece was Danielle Anjou. The painting was originally intended for the Heavy Metal magazine calendar, but Doug was late with it. Then, when he was delivering the painting to HEAVY METAL his portfolio case got caught in the subway doors as they closed. He thought nothing of it in the moment, but when he got to the offices and pulled the painting out, the lower left corner was bent. It resulted in one of life's bizarre scenes where the editors and art director were gushing and heaping praise on the art and he was cringing over the abused painting. He took it back to the studio, cleaned the area out, filled it with modelling paste, repainted the color and attached a brace across the back. The place where the board buckled is still visible. The image later appeared on Janet Morris, Thieves’ World series, Beyond Sanctuary published by Baen Books 1985, he said because Baen was always looking for cheap cover art and licensing existing art is almost always cheaper than commissioning new. So, they bought SORCERESS for the first book and commissioned him to paint the other two covers. Bottom line, he said this one is his baby...it was never exhibited, but it's probably the most published piece he did having been a poster, a print, an art book feature piece, a bookmark, etc. I also recently purchased the 10”x15” watercolor on board prelim from George Hagenauer; Thank you! And maybe someone out there can help me out with one other thing.... Heritage sold the drawing prelim in November 2009, https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/illustrations/doug-beekman-thieves-world-tempus-sequence-beyond-sanctuary-book-cover-preliminary-illustration-original-art-ba/a/7013-93086.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515. If anyone here has this piece or knows who does own it, I am interested in purchasing it. Social/Sharing |

This is an incredible illustration Ray. A great addition to your amazing collection. Good story too. I hope you find that prelim. Maybe you have? I'm still going through your collection.
