DescriptionThe Black Eagle stories commemorate a time that the U.S. Army (the Air Force was not yet a separate branch) was tip-toeing toward racial equality. A small number of black men could enter the pilot elite in their own squads, not yet integrated with the rest of the corps. This series was canceled after six issues, so this story never saw print. Black Eagle was a continuing feature in the previous issues. After an establishing panel at the air base, we get one panel of the coming battle before beginning a flashback to the base again. The margins contain several editorial notations which have been scribbled out. One says, "Letterer: Bold panel lines all pages." An instruction to the inker says "Romeo - read script - White guys, black group = see green (!) on script." The first caption need amending from "the only black squadron in the Air Force" to "one of the black squadrons in the Air Force." In the bottom left, "Romeo - fill in." The the hangar is replacement art, the original scene having been cut out, and a new image taped in its place. Social/Sharing |

Just from the first six pages, you can see the bravery and determination on display. The battle in the sky is enthralling sweat dripping non stop action and peril! It even makes the character want to turn back from their mission.

Cool find! Tuskegee Airmen! Dick Ayers saw these aircraft up close serving in the Army Air Corps during the war.
