DescriptionThe gritty Marvel Knights imprint gave writer Garth Ennis an opportunity to go crazy with his brand of hard-boiled noir action, pitting Frank Castle against the Gnucci crime family. Steve Dillon and Jimmy Palmiotti provided interior art, but covers were entrusted to Tim Bradstreet, who provided a striking set of photorealistic Punishers, generally with a giant skull in the background. Bradstreet told me that his photo reference for this series was a local club DJ. The white streak in the upper right makes the skull seem to be breathing fire. Tim's fingerprints are literally all over the haze. Comic book covers often pose a challenge when considered as freestanding pieces of art. The composition needs to make sense even when the top third is covered by the masthead for publication. But it's nice to have something there besides white space when the art enters the secondary market. Bradstreet solved this problem nicely with a mix of inked textures and bullet holes. He first drew the circles and then inked around them, rather than masking them individually. He pointed out to me a few instances where he transgressed the interior white space in the process of inking around the circles. His signature in the bottom right corner is pasted on. Tim discusses his creation process, from photograph to vellum version to final cover, in this video. Social/Sharing |

During this run of covers, Bradstreet must have drawn in dark and dank basements that only have a single lightbulb! Anything more than one light bulb wouldn't have resulted in the same look!
