Description

26"x36" (framed 30"x40") Painted in 2016; purchased in 2024. I had been staring at her for a long time and being 20 years between acquiring Mark's art, it was time.

Mark wrote of the painting, �The term "penumbra," derived from the Latin words paene meaning "almost" and umbra meaning "shadow," refers to the area where only part of a light source is obscured, much like the shadow cast during an eclipse.

Psychologically, we all possess a "shadow self," comprising those aspects of ourselves we may deem unacceptable. This can include traits such as personal power, independence, or emotional sensitivity�qualities that, while sometimes seen as uncivilized or undesirable, are integral to our being.

Carl Jung emphasized the importance of recognizing and accepting this darker side of ourselves as essential to achieving wholeness and integration. It is through self-exploration and acceptance that we can embrace our shadow, discovering the many gifts it has to offer. When acknowledged and handled with care, these shadow elements can enrich our lives rather than hinder us.

In my painting "Penumbra," the wing-shaped darker element behind the model's shoulders symbolizes the shadow self. When embraced and integrated, this aspect brings about balance and wholeness, transforming what was once hidden into a source of uplifting blessing.�
