Description

Roy Krenkel loved drawing two things: prehistoric beasts, and the humans who tangle with them. This picture has no less than nine of the latter, including one just peeking his head above the hill, and each in a totally different but totally dynamic pose. I once had the privilege to sit with a cadre of professional artists as they pored over a collection of Krenkel sketches like it was the Book of Kells. Along with his colleagues Frank Frazetta and Angelo Torres, he helped set the tone for action illustration of the last hundred years. Here he uses toned paper to allow him to highlight the clouds, the loincloths, and a little musculature with white paint. A few dashes of green and brown paint complete the composition of this 9x12" piece.

This illustrative Krenkle work is a spectacular explosion of the raw struggle of early man and touches what primitive emotions that may still stir within us today.
