DescriptionIf you know anything about David Finch, then you know that he is one of the nicest people to ever work in the comics industry. His Monday night YouTube show that he produces along with his wife, Meredith, is a treasure trove of information that works through the mechanics of drawing. If you have not seen the show, I highly recommend it.Shortly after the great Tim Sale passed away last year, David and Meredith Finch put together a tribute show to their friend. During the show, David pencilled and inked an 11" x 17" Batman piece that paid homage to a particular Tim Sale Batman image from The Long Halloween or Dark Victory. If someone knows the exact image that David is referencing, please let me know in the comments. Thank you very much. I bought this piece directly from David and Jason Schachter of Essential Sequential at Awesome Con 2023, which is my hometown show. This is my first David Finch piece and I am very happy to have this 11" x 17" artwork from a modern master. By the way, you can see the YouTube show where David drew my piece right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oWPMBc2CxU Social/Sharing |

It's a pose Tim liked to draw in convention sketches and one he eventually used for the cover to the Absolute Long Halloween.

Thank you, Jared, for the information. I knew that I had seen the pose before.

Thanks, Marcus. It looks like DC used the original image for a variety of things.

Thanks, Gal! I agree; David Finch really channeled Tim Sale's art style for this piece, especially in how he inked the cape.

Beautiful piece, A K, and a perfect tribute: it's a lovely reference of (but without a slavish adherence to) a key image, but executed in the style and approach of the pen-wielder - completely standing on its own (or, more accurately, pouncing from the ceiling on its own :) ). What an outstanding first Finch! Your excitement is clear and fully warranted! Congrats, A K!

Thank you, Jason, for the kind words! I agree with you completely; Finch channeled Tim Sale without slavishly immitating him. The resulting piece still looks like a David Finch artwork. I hope you are well, my friend.

Congrats on your first Finch buddy! I watched the YouTube episode and it was very touching. Dave was obviously very much affected by the loss of his friend. The fact that this image has such a strong personal (and emotional) connection for him makes it truly special.

Thanks, buddy! I also watched the episode and was moved by it. As you note, David was very affected by his friend's passing, but he soldiered on to create this fitting tribute to Tim Sale's legacy.

Tim is still inspiring new art and will continue to do so, as he has me recently. Congrats on this powerful Sale/Finch piece.

What a gorgeous tribute to Tim Sale! Tim Sale's work has long been a favorite of mine, as has David Finch's work. Congrats on a great pick-up!

Thank you, Bill! Given the fact you own some beautiful covers from both men, that is quite the compliment.
