DescriptionThis is a very special post. Not only is it the very FIRST page from the very first issue of Spider-Boy's very first solo series. But it's the ONLY page that Paco Medina drew in a traditional way on an art board with inks over pencils. Plus it's just so dang cool! You get a full page splash of Spidey and Spider-Boy in action, dodging bowling pins being fired from a special bowling pin gun wielded by a villain with a bowling ball for a head ... named Gutterball! And this is his very first appearance ever!! Hahahahh! It's this kind of silliness that I absolutely love. Special thanks to Joe from Comix Art Connect for this one. Thanks for looking! You hit a strike with this page for sure!
I like to imagine Rek-Rap isat an end lane bowling by himself, but he can't get his fingers to fit in the ball so he's just chucking them at the pins. (My phone messed up the comment the first time)

Hahaha, I love the hilarious image of Rek-Rap that you described. I can totally see it. Maybe Miles & Spider-Gwen are there too, in another lane, along with Spider-Punk, Spider-Woman and Spider-Man 2099. Spiderverse League Bowling Night! Why not?

If he strikes, he's the 1979 Odor-Eaters Champion. He's got one foot in the frying pan and one in the pressure cooker.

A gun that shoots bowling pins? I find that kind of hard to...oh wait...IT'S AWESOME!

Ernie McCracken: It all comes down to this roll. Spider-Boy, a man-child, with a dream to topple bowling giant Gutter Ball. If he strikes, he's the 2023 Odor-Eaters Champion. He's got one foot in the frying pan and one in the pressure cooker. Believe me, as a bowler, I know that right about now, your bladder feels like an overstuffed vacuum cleaner bag and your butt is kinda like an about-to-explode bratwurst.
Spider-Boy: Hey. Do you mind? I wasn't talking when you were bowling.
Ernie McCracken: Was I talking out loud? Was I? Sorry. Good luck.

This is FUN. There was a time when I used to bowl every Sunday night with friends for fun. I loved it. I averaged around 189 for years and had 5 200+ games with a high of 224 (twice), all of which are really good for an amateur who never even bothered to learn how to throw the ball correctly. I rarely threw gutterballs, which ironically is another reason I love this piece!

So fun, Paul! Dynamic pair o' Spidey poses and how you not gonna love that new baddie?! I mean, 3 dots for a face and you can clearly tell how he's feeling! And you know what? Also reminded me of the cover to Sleepwalker 2 - the arrival of Eightball :) I may nab that cover yet! Congrats!

This is the kind of image I try to get on all of my pieces but seldom accomplish it. You get two heroes vs a villain on a full splash page (this goes for covers too). In the case of Gutterball, I would love to read his origin story for sure. He is quite unique, and this splash is outstanding!!!
