Description

The Dynamic Duo by the great Norm Breyfogle. Dynamic,the perfect word to describe Norm's art and this piece. Done in 1983, one year before his first professional work, four years before landing Detective Comics. The best Batman & Robin piece Norm ever did.

I first saw this piece in the early days of my collecting, early 2000's. It was in a photo of some dealers wall. I was awestruck! The solid black background with Batman and Robin in a spotlight. It was a photo with an entire wall of art, and the Batman and Robin stood out. I wanted that Batman and Robin, the problem was I couldn't tell who the artist was or whose wall it was on.

Searching the words "Batman & Robin Black & white original art" brings up a lot of different items. Lol. Luckily it finally pops up one day and I find out it's by Norm Breyfogle. Bingo! I search all dealers sites and I mean all dealers sites and nothing! Nobody has it on their site. Never found out who has it. San Diego is the only Con I ever go to and I've never seen it there either. I give up the search.

In 2015 I finally found the piece but the price was too high. I pass on it. After admiring it for three straight years, in 2018 I made an offer on it, one I think the dealer is sure to say no to. To my surprise he agrees. A piece I've long admired since the dial up days was finally mine.

Done in 1983 Batman & Robin by Norm Breyfogle on 21X15 board.

I will be appearing with Ruben DaCollector on his youtube channel this Sunday November 27 @5pm pst for Comic Art ONE on ONE #6. We will be discussing art, collecting and other things (I actually have no idea what we will talk about, since nothing is preplanned). It should be interesting.

Wow! So cool to see his pre-pro work. You can already see the style he would become famous for starting to develop here in this piece and it's also great to see that he inked it himself, which is something fans would usually get to see a few years later, though typically only on covers. Congrats on nailing this down, especially after such a long journey after first laying eyes on it!

The fact that Breyfogle created such a great piece before even going pro shows that he was clearly meant to draw Batman.

As someone who started reading DC Comics in 1989, Norm and Jim Aparo are THE bat-artists in my book. I can fully appreciate why you pursued this over so many years.

The effort you put into finding it was well worth it!

I remember seeing not nearly as good photos of it (on ebay I think) years ago, and always thought this a stunning piece, so am glad it has ended up with someone who clearly loves it, and has given us all a chance to see a much better scan!
