Description

In 1989 DC relaunched the Legion.
The new series taking place five years later than when the old series ended and as such is referred by Legion fans as the FYL (Five Years Later) Legion.
Gone was the bright utopian future and by issue four so was the entire Legion history.
Mordru has conquered Tharn and captured Mysal Nal (aka The Witch Witch), sapping her power and made her his concubine.
Not only the stories were darker and more 'adult' but the art by Keith Giffen had evolved and was darker and the stories (except for a splash page or two) were all told in a nine panel grid.
Also controversially, Giffen was accused of swiping the art of Argentinian artist José Antonio Muñoz. Years later Giffen addressed the controversy as follows:
"I had a bad incident with studying somebody's work very closely at one point, and I resolved never, ever to do it again. I can get so immersed in somebody's work that I start turning into a Xerox machine and it's not good. . . . There was no time I was sitting there tracing or copying, no duplicating, pulling out of memory and putting down on paper after intense study, absolutely."
The FYL drove divisions among Legion fandom that persist today with many loving it and many hating it.
Despite not being as popular as his earlier art, pages and covers from this era are hard to find.
Here on the cover of issue 7, in the battleground that was Mordru's gardens, battered and bruised, Mysa struggles to free her mind and cast one final spell.

Wow!! My favorite era of the Legion.  Great seeing an original cover from that period.  I still regret not buying the cover for issue #11 when someone was selling it on Usenet back in the 1990s.

In 1986, I finally began to earn enough money to add as many titles to my pull list as I wanted, so, since I was a big Marvel guy growing up, I used the opportunity to finally start adding more DC titles whose characters I'd always found eye appealing but couldn't afford to buy, like the Legion. So that meant my first exposure to reading Legion was with this new series. I can't remember almost anything about it, but when this cover came up at auction, it sparked a memory and I went back and read this story again. As I read it, the story details started coming back to me. I enjoyed it, but clearly this was very unlike any Legion comic that had come before and I clearly could recognize that Giffen and the Bierbaum's simply wanted to try a completely different approach with the team. It wasn't what I would've preferred to be my introduction to reading Legion comics if I'd had a choice, but I still remember enjoying it and it was fun just for being something completely different from all the Marvel stuff I was already reading anyway. Nice to see this one ended up with you, Miki!

I thought FYL was amazing. I thought that Keith's solution to the No Superboy mandate was clever. The first ten issues or so were excellent. This cover is an outstanding example from that run. Congratulations!

I liked the bright, shiny Legion and didn't care for this storyline very much.  Guess I'm more of an optimist but the cover is wonderful.

This is my Hands Down Favorite Era for LoSH. Everything came together with Tom and Mary and Keith and Al.

By no means an action cover, but it startles with the blistering power of raw draining emotions.  Rich and atmospheric, it creates an intense scene that unforgettably haunts your psyche with a lasting effect.

I must confess I've yet to read that era of the LSH but DC conveniently is releasing it in omnibuses.

That being said, the art was great (with early Pearson!) and the writing by T&MB vaunted.

I will always prefer Lightle's era but the Giffen art from that era was something else (despite/because of the obvious influences).

I am not a LSH fan. Prior to the 5YL series I had never read a legion book and I have not read one since. However. I loved this series. It got me, hook line and sinker. The stories, the art, it was the first time I really noticed Keith Giffen and it made me a fan. Great cover. Love Giffens art from this period. Lots of good memories. Congrats.

This was an amazing era for DC and the Legion and having this piece of it is certainly a feather in the cap.
