Description

11x17 bristol board, inks over printed bluelines

“The problem is that you look at me and think the blade is the weapon.”

The Mighty Gorgon has no chill. Well, none of the mutants in the fourth issue of Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men are known for lax attitudes. Between Magneto, Apocalypse, Xavier, Gorgon, and Cyclops, Scott somehow ends up being the bright and cheery member of the group. That’s a pretty clear indication--or perhaps an indictment--that you’re in some very intense company.

Nothing says “swagger” like strolling into the World Economic Forum with a security detail of just two dudes in finely tailored suits, nice sunglasses, and emphatically zero guns. Really though, Cyclops and Gorgon probably don’t need to be there but it would be a little bothersome for Magneto to have his wonderfully cynical monologue about soft power get interrupted by a couple of hit squads later in this issue.

Most of this comic consists of talking heads in this nine panel layout but the entire issue manages to be tense, exciting, and unsettling all at the same time. That’s a credit to Hickman’s sharp dialogue and the grim-faced yet unbothered countenance coming from Leinil Francis Yu’s mutants. The Krakoans seem perfectly calm and comfortable in incredibly hostile territory and, really, why wouldn’t they be? Hostile territory is all they’ve ever known and, uh, a single member of their entourage casually drops that he brought about the Dark Ages all by himself. Yup.

This enjoyably grey issue, titled Global Economics, is easily one of the best of Hickman’s run and an all-time great X-Men comic in general. I believe this was also the last comic inked by Yu’s longtime collaborator, the great Gerry Alanguilan. I’ve loved a lot of comics produced by this duo over the years so thanks for all the good times. 🍻

A very fine exercise in finding nuance in the series of headshots that meld perfectly to the running dialogue!

Gorgon is such a fun character, this captures a side of him so very well.  Nice panel page.  I like how that last panel is left unbordered for a bit of an aha moment.  Congrats!

I 100% got this for the Gorgon panels. It's not a visually exciting page but I think it's very recognizable for people who've read Hickman's run. I love how Gorgon goes from 0 to CHOOSE VIOLENCE and then Cyclops, of all people, has to defuse the ensuing awkward social situation. It's a great example of heroes and villains being tossed together on Krakoa and trying to meet each other in the middle.

I'm bummed Gorgon never made it past X of Swords but at least he went out like a boss.
