Long before I figured out that published comic art was a thing, a friend texted me from SDCC 2015 and asked if I wanted a sketch from Stan Sakai. My replies were something like �OH WHAT� and �YES� and she told me I should come up with an idea for Stan to sketch. After thinking about it for what was probably an embarrassingly long time, I finally came up with an idea I liked and was also genuinely curious about: Usagi and his favourite food.

Would it be noodles? Sushi? Saba shioyaki, perhaps? The rabbit ronin has clobbered a lot of bad guys with like melons and daikons over the past 40 years so, really, it could be anything. My buddy sent me a few photos of Stan drawing the sketch and I got my answer: Usagi's snack of choice is the humble takoyaki. A convenient (and very tasty) choice for the ronin on the go.

After I started going to SDCC myself, years later, I've ended up with a few other Stan Sakai pieces and I'm immensely happy to have them. Usagi Yojimbo has been an incredibly consistent and fun comic book for forty years (forty!!) and Stan Sakai is one of the medium's all-time greats.

Sakai and Usagi have become staples of the convention showing how certain artists can endure and thrive to become legends one day!
