Description

Shown here is the original art for one of David Wright's pinups for The Sketch, which appeared in the March 22, 1944, issue.

The pinup features a heartsick young woman asking herself "Why Doesn't He Write?" (the title of the piece). Given that it is wartime, it may be that she has not heard from him in a while and is worried. The woman's body and pillows are loosely laid in, as you often see with a pinup in The Sketch, but the young woman's face is fully finished and rendered.

Wright loved to use pure white to add highlights and sparkle to his surfaces, and here we see him use it very effectively on the young woman's face.

The piece was rendered in gouache on paper with an image that nearly fills the 11.5 x 15.25-inch image area. As he often did, Wright initialed the piece with "DW" in the bottom left.
