Description

I've admired Eduardo Risso's art for a long time, especially his trademark noir black & white chiaroscuro-esque technique. Naturally I wanted to pick up something from him, but his best known work (100 Bullets) wasn't really my cup of tea. I did like his version of Batman but unfortunately waited too long and all my favorite Broken City pages were gone. I've always liked space and sci-fi and thought the Spaceman story was really well done. Hoped to get artwork with the characters in their spacesuits and was surprised to discover that the very last page of the mini-series was still available. A fitting and poignant end to the story -- I love the focus on main character Orson's despondent eyes and then zooming back out to see his view of the Earth. Not all of us are cut out to be heroes, I guess....

This story ending page is so well executed that it is a definite conversation starter. It is self contained and demonstrates Risso's use of black and white contrasts to create mood. That crescent shadow in panel 1 already hints that this is on the moon. The swirling within the Earth's atmosphere is just stunning brush execution as the Spaceman stares longingly towards home.
