Description

This art was done by Wally Wood for the one-page gag "Discovery Explains Atom Fusion" that appeared in Humbug #1 (1957), edited by Harvey Kurtzman. It's the only page of art Wood did for Humbug. The gag explains how nuclear fusion works by showing two atoms playing tennis. A copy of the published page containing the written explanation is also attached.

Great gag! From afar, the high level of illustration by Wood makes them look like postage stamps! It also has the look of the Pong video game with a back and forth.

Great comment! My initial reaction was also that it looked like Pong. I then realized that Pong didn't come out until years later. It's interesting that cold fusion is still a current topic, and this came out over 60 years ago.

Great pick up! Kurtzman had so many wonderful artists working his gags. Wood is at the top of the list.

Gorgeous page from the great Wally Wood! Love this gag! Fun parody of an illustration drawn like it's right out of a '50s science textbook!
