Description

Can a great artist also be a great person? I think that the odds are that this question will be answered in the affirmative if you are repped by Felix who definitely has a knack of being able to approach artists who are both superb in their craft and (most importantly in my view) their personality. I have been hugely disappointed in the past by those few - not just confined to comics writers or artists - who, whilst hugely talented, are (pardon me saying this) duds as human beings. I can still enjoy their talent (whatever it might be), but that extra that's missing makes me happy not to have to meet them in person again.

I have spent some time on a somewhat lengthy preamble because it is great to say all this in the abstract but one still needs to actually meet the person concerned. As I have mentioned briefly elsewhere, what struck me when I finally had the opportunity to meet Ryan is how humble and friendly he is. All genuine, and not put on for fans. And he is supremely hardworking too. When not chatting, he was always busy at work (in this instance, on the many commission requests that were flooding in).

As for his fantastic talent, I think that this cover of the DC Universe speaks for itself. Just look at the insane detail (that also includes all the classic poses that have been seared into our memories). It is mind-blowing! One could spend hours just looking at this double page spread cover (which is a massive 20 by 29 inches). As for the empty space in what is the front cover, perhaps someone with a better grasp of the book can confirm this but I think that it was to accommodate a (previous?) image in a (previous?) edition which consisted of the three most popular DC superheroes - Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.

Holy cats, this is an EPIC panoply of DC moments and poses over the years!  It's a delicious feast for the eyes and stirs up so many memories!  So glad to hear that the artist Ryan Sook is such a great guy too.  Major major congrats, CAB!

The eastern side is my favorite era of DC.  The Crimson Avenger and Hawkman, yes!   Sook truly captures the artistic style of the characters.  The GA Flash is a great example of that.   Ryan Shook is one the best artists of this era.   This is a magnificent masterpiece.  CAB, you have a great eye and collection.  You can send any DC art my way,  I am a DC fan.

Many thanks, Ilia!  Very perceptive comments indeed!  Unfortunately, I am also (at least a bit of) a DC fan too!

Many thanks, Amir!  This is a truly amazing DC Who's Who indeed - and from, as I have mentioned, a really nice artist as well!

Congratulations - I remember when this cover was dropped and being a bit too slow with my claim. Sook is the perfect artist to render all of these characters and allude to many of the great stories DC comics has published over the last 80 years.

A quick Amazon search for the published cover shows that a separate Sook illustration of DC's trinity was inserted into that blank spot.

I'm so glad to know your face to face time with Sook was enjoyable! As you say, the opposite is true all too often. A magnificent piece of work featuring homages to plenty of memorable DC moments. Congratulations!

Many thanks, Rubén!  Yes, it was such a pleasure to meet and chat with Ryan.  I did purchase this cover long before meeting him and now it is even more meaningful (if that is at all possible).

DC at their finest!  Sook does his take on many memorable moments and incorporates some of the style and flair that celebrates the original artists as well.

Many thanks, Marcus!  And you are absolutely spot on as usual.  It is very nostalgic and yet has Ryan's own style as well!

Many thanks, Kavi!  I should have posted this some time back and meeting Ryan reminded me how remiss I was in not doing so.  So here it is.
