DescriptionBack when I started collecting the Fantastic Four #5 Doom origin page owned by John Papandrea and the Journey into Mystery #84 Thor origin page owned by Glenn Gold were the pages I admired more than any others. It was almost impossible to fathom acquiring a page that would sit alongside these classic pieces, but a chance did come my way. When Mike Burkey acquired the book I was straight onto it and was able to work out a deal for this page, which fulfilled my one true grail quest and I am still grateful to Mike all these years later. This page compliments the previous page in that it goes through the turmoil of the Hulk's existence as opposed to that of Bruce Banner. To have the gamma bomb panel by Kirby in my collection is beyond my wildest dreams, as it is one of the most iconic images in the medium. To complement that with all the Avengers battling the Hulk in the middle panel is just insane and it is still hard to believe that I get to hold and enjoy this piece. When comparing this origin sequence with Glen's, it is possible to see that Kirby was able to integrate these recaps into the body of the story using a reflective head and shoulders panel, like the one in the bottom right of the previous page, as opposed to a stand-alone page that sits outside the body of the narrative. Avengers #5 revolves completely around the Hulk and the next page will help highlight the transition from what I term the 'archaic' or 'Universal horror' Hulk to the modern 'Freudian' Hulk and this is why this origin has been squeezed into this issue. Killer page! Early example of how Jack and Stan tied together the Marvel Universe with pages like this where you get retelling of an origin and a full team shot! Once an enemy, Hulk now turned ally!

When it comes to early (or any!) Marvel, there is almost nothing better than a large center panel featuring assembling Avengers. And, that top tier -- excelsior!

There may only be a handful of pages that have the whole team battling and it was hard to believe that one came my way.

Also I love the economy of storytelling. A whole origin in three panels, followed by four issues of The Avengers in just one panel then just for kicks letting a soap opera take up three more panels. Dude was really good at tiers and getting you to turn the page.
