Description

Another unsettling page with a Steve Ditko-lookalike from J. Webster Sharp’s untitled 8-page story from Now: The New Comics Anthology #12, published by Fantagraphics in 2023. Apologies in advance to Simon 😅

I’m posting this page to mark the occasion of the release of Sharp’s first book, The Scrapbook of Life and Death (published by Avery Hill) - see additional image.

I've always enjoyed her style. This is creepy as hell.

Man, this one doesn't creep me out as much as it makes me wonder what the hell is going on with this very bizarre scene. But the pointillism technique is so beautifully done!

This page makes a good Sharp point!  Always have the good sense to wear a hat and tighty whities when taking baby for a feeding.  Gerber's new line of nutritious baby food is mouth watering good.

Unsettling is quite right. It reminds me of the work of Shintarô Kago (minus the gore)

I think that's a good comparison!

The stippling and detail is fantastic, and I like the panel layout for this page. I think that center square really draws your eye. The most powerful thing is the subject matter. It's capable of scaring the biggest horror afficionado, and that in itself speaks volumes to the power of indie comics. Would love to see Disney pick this up for a Halloween special! :) Congrats Mark!

Well, it's good that we made it to page three before things got -really- creepy... :)  More beautiful (and unsettling) work.  Super impressive pointillism here as well (which is a word I learned from Rubén's comment on page two - thanks, Rubén! :) ).  That top panel of the baby dolls / drones / maquettes is a very powerful sci-fi statement, standing shoulder-to-shoulder alongside works like The Matrix in showing how the "raw materials" of human frailty can be grafted onto something... not so nice.  Challenging, compelling, impressive work!  Great page, Mark!

Who, me? After I investigated Sharp and discovered we share some similar circumstances – we were bred and live on the same island – I considered getting the new book that you are celebrating by posting this page from Now, but the cover of that book is enough to give me the willies. Perhaps when I develop a higher visual discomfort threshold. As a number of the above comments have already staked a claim to the term "creepy" (a word which if it did not exist would have to be coined to describe this page) it looks like I will have to invoke the other Warren Comics-related adjective and say this page is chillingly eerie – difficult to look at, difficult to look away.
