"Some Things to Know About Caroline Cash"

Another page from 2024 Eisner Award-winning cartoonist Caroline Cash. This issue was also nominated for "Best Single Issue or One-Shot" at the 2025 Eisner Awards.

One of the most compelling things about reading the work of autobiographical cartoonists, especially in its earliest stages, is witnessing what the cartoonist chooses to reveal about themselves and how (not that one should assume that there's a 1-to-1 correspondence between persona and creator).

Here, Cash gives us a lot to work with, both visually and with what she conveys through her cartoon persona. Sure, she picks her nose, can be a little petty, and wants you to like her work but this version of Cash isn’t someone we’d necessarily avoid after spending any time with them. The charming quality of her drawing also softens any of the rougher edges of her personality, which leads me to wonder if Cash isn’t being slightly guarded here in her self-presentation—unlike previous autobio cartoonists who reveal almost TOO much of themselves. The late Joe Matt comes to mind.

I’m sure Cash has thought about this and other questions related to self-presentation. What's the line, if any, between my own life and how I shape it on the comics page? How much do I reveal? How much is the reader entitled to know about the version of the cartoonist they’re reading about? We shouldn’t expect Cash to definitively answer these and other questions in her work. She's clearly having a lot of fun navigating these questions and having fun with some of the conventions and tropes of a creator introducing themselves to their audience.

I appreciate autobiographical cartooning. This has the feeling of a Sunday newspaper strip, which I love. Cash seems to be willing to be open, honest and self-depracating, all of which go a long way towards giving the reader a sense of familiarity.

Getting to know you, getting to know Pee Pee Poo Poo
Getting to like poo, getting to hope you like Pee.
Getting to know you, put it in my page,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
My cup of Pee.

Getting to know Poo,
Getting to Pee free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know that art page
Cash that you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about Poo
Page by page.

Fun and poignant à la fois --- I can feel the artist's pain in the final panel.  Interesting mix of influences and it reads really well despite how many word balloons she managed to include

I love the frantic sense of the overlapping layouts here and her SD character is cute.

One for the ages - in 50 years this is on the cover of a HA catalogue. Really nice!

Ha! If only. I'll be long gone of course but I hope that means CC will have had a successful career.

Man I had fun reading that whole thing! The autobiographical cartoonist isn't something I've had a ton of exposure personally but it's cool to see such an entertaining example like this that drew me in right from the first panel and kept my attention the whole time. Great page!
