Description

*I chose a picture of one of these two pieces because I felt like it'd be a good cover for the rest. the pieces are so large, I did the best I could either sharing pictures or taking some of my own, but it was really difficult for me to get good images with my lack of skills and tools. Apologies in advance.

I've gone back and forth about how to put these pieces up on CAF for a while. Ultimately I've decided to put them up together, and not to hurry myself as I talk about them.

Talking at length like this about pieces on CAF is not the norm, I know, but these paintings are important to me. If you just want the stats, you can skip to the end. :)

The Belgariad was a big deal to me when I read it as a kid, and it's accurate to say it was one of a number of fantasy series that eventually influenced my own art.

In hindsight, it's pretty ironic (the Eddings' sordid past aside) that David got into writing fantasy in a somewhat cynical way. My understanding is that he was a more literary fiction writer earlier in his career. However, when his early efforts weren't very successful, he noticed that Lord of the Rings was still selling, and decided to write in that market instead.

Love them or hate them, The Belgariad books had a massive impact on the Fantasy genre.

Anyway, I read this series the first time as a kid via the Doubleday, Book Club omnibus editions. Daniel Horne's art really grabbed me, and to this day, his illustrations of the series are probably my favorite. I'd love to own some more work by Mr. Horne eventually, but I am incredibly blessed that the very first pieces I was able to pick up were these ones.

Since I've had these pieces, I've found it interesting how much they differ from more modern fantasy art--the interior borders are very uncommon, for instance. A lot of people who see pictures of the pieces for the first time also don't seem to understand that the backgrounds are not just random colors--they're maps of the world within the story!

I believe these books came out circa early 1984 or 1985. The Doubleday printing is 20 years old now!

How interesting is it that these omnibuses were launched right after the last book in the series. I am not aware of many other popular fantasy series that have done this. While it's a common occurrence now with indie publishing and ebooks, for these collections to have published when they did, work probably began on them /before/ Enchanter's End Game was published!

Alright, I'll stop babbling now. I'm just still very excited to have them on my wall.

The pieces vary in size a bit, but they're both around 28"x25", oils on masonite.
