Description

It's been almost 15 years to the month since I bought my last Krazy Kat Sunday page. Given the rise in prices of Herriman's work, I never expected to be able to add another Sunday page to my collection. So it is with great joy, surprise and luck that I add this sweet page from June 1, 1919 to my home. The page features Ignatz, who develops freckles from laying out in the sun, much to the consternation of the other characters. And what a cast of characters it is! Gooseberry Sprig makes and appearance, as does the rarely seen Terry Turtle. Brick-maker Kolin Kelly seems to make reference to the Spanish Flu, while Walter Cephus Austridge and Don Kiyote all have their own opinions. Krazy Kat enters from stage left, singing a riff off of "In the Sweet By and By", the hymn from 1868.

The page has some of Herriman's wonderful writing in the first panel: "Ignatz Mouse, a rodent in whose heart lingers a great love of the tropics basks in the radiance of his favorite celestial luminary -- the "Sun" -- " Take that Shakespeare!

Also featured are those wonderful Navajo symbols, the wagon wheel and lightning bolt, that Herriman often incorporated into the Sunday pages.

Fantastic.  It's like a convetion of dermatologists, each with their own opinion!  Krazy is as lovely as ever.  This will look great with the proper conservation and I am so happy you hard work paid off.

Wonderful. Bring it to a good conservator. This has to be saved for future people to gaze on.

Such great magic all around. Do we know why it had to only go to Chicago? And that freckle lotion seems very...specific. Is that a parody of some then-well-known bottle?

Glen, I think it says "Make July for Chicago".  I'm not sure why the powers-that-be would want it to run a month later in Chicago, but I noticed that as well.

Above that it says something like "negative made and shipped for chicago?"

Yep, good eyes.  I'm thinking that line 1 was the original plan, crossed out, with July being the new target month.  Why?  I've got no idea.

Clearly, Chicago Frecklefest 1919 was postponed till July that year.
