This original 15" by 20" acrylic painting on Crescent board by illustrator Lee MacLeod was used for the cover of the 1995 Simon & Schuster middle-grade novella The Howling Ghost, the second book in the Spooksville series by New York Times bestselling author Christopher Pike.

Churning waves rage upon a jetty that leads to a lonely deserted lighthouse as tempestuous streaks of clouds cut through the moonlit sky. In the distance, the dying embers of a sunset give faint hope to Cindy Makey, who witnessed her five-year-old brother, Neil, get grabbed by ghostly hands from the beacon's beam and vanish into the howling night. The police say the boy must have fallen and drowned, but nothing is as it seems in Springville, or Spooksville, as the kids who live there call it. Sally Wilcox convinces her friends Adam Freeman and Watch to investigate the bizarre disappearance and confront the female spirit of an embittered old lighthouse keeper.

Pike wrote a total of 24 books about the supernaturally-charged coastal town of Spooksville from 1995 to 1998. A television adaptation followed in 2013 on the Hub Network, a cable channel joint venture between Discovery and Hasbro.
