DescriptionMany years back I was fortunate to do a massive trade to get this unbelievably early rendition of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. This is actually the second image Mike ever created of Hellboy. I know Mike has the first rendering of Hellboy in his possession, but what separates this from the first one is that you can clearly see the distinctive look the character would later have. So, he is pretty much now recognizable as the Hellboy that we all know. It's also our first introduction to the B.P.R.D.Social/Sharing |

Amazing piece, Bechara! This is actually the third known drawing of Hellboy and the first time we meet the BPRD team as stated. Other than some concept sketches this is first finished drawings of Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman along with two unfamiliar looking characters. The other two team members were eventually used but not in the way we see them here. The gentleman in the middle is your generic team leader. Mike Mignola eventually changed the character design and made a more interesting version years later – you know that version as Daimio. The outfit/ look may seem familiar because Mike liked it so much he reused later for Lobster Johnson. The character on the far right was never given an official name back then but has been referred to as “Ectoplasm guy” over the years. Mike intended this character to manipulate ectoplasm out of his arms and hands, which can be seen in concept sketch. The design changed dramatically over time but this became Johann.

Fun and rare glimpse of the ideas then compared to now. We can trace the evolution of Mignola's artwork as well from this piece compared to how he draws Hellboy today.

Nice! I imagine this would have been Hellboy if it were published by Image Comics in the early 90s (A superhero team book).
