DescriptionHere's a large art piece by Archie's first artist; Bob Montana.Archie's Joke Book (1954) was a format unlike anything I have seen that was comic book related. Every page or 1/2 page was a joke; set-up and punchline... boom. No multi-page stories, just Henny Youngman or Rodney Dangerfield throwing joke after joke. In current times this format would seem familiar to anyone that has purchased FAR SIDE, or PEANUTS, or CALVIN AND HOBBS collections of daily and Sunday publications. Each page has 1 or 2 "funnies". I'm not a historian of comics from that era so it may have been a common format. But it was new to me. Taking the following from Wikipedia: "The Andy Hardy movies were an inspiration for Goldwater to have a comic book about a relatable normal person. Teenaged Archibald "Chick" Andrews debuted with Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones in Pep Comics #22 (Dec. 1941), in a story by writer Vic Bloom and artist Bob Montana." Social/Sharing |

Fun piece. I really like his work. The second last panel is great. At this time, Montana was spending most of his time on the Archie daily and Sunday strips, but he still did a little bit of work in the comics. These one-pagers would be easier for him to do while maintaining his other work.

Thanks for the added info. That makes a lot of sense why and how they would find such a great way to use him. His character work just makes me smile every time
