DescriptionI was truly shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Herb Trimpe. I had been of fan of Herb since reading "The Incredible Hulk" as a kid, but in the course of writing the book about Herb, I developed an even greater admiration for him as a person - his love of flying, his experience teaching school, his appreciation of fans, and his sense of duty and commitment in serving as a chaplain at Ground Zero in New York after 9/11. He was not only a gifted artist, but a remarkable storyteller, who touched so many people's lives over the years with his stories. He had been so active in recent years, attending conventions all over the world, that I confess I took his presence for granted. He will be sorely missed.Social/Sharing |

I too will sorely miss Herb - it's hard to believe I'll no longer be able to sneak away from the long line of fans at his table to catch a bite to eat. I knew him first from his G.I. Joe and Hulk work (which had a huge influence on me), but then got to know him just as a great person who loved his fans and worked hard to provide for his family. I was blown away when he agreed to drive down to my house from NY to DC to meet with fans at my 2010 Cherry Blossom Spectacular. It really showed how great a guy he was and I'm glad people got to know him better there. I was honored to help him over the years with his various sketchbook projects - it allowed me to get to know him better and appreciate a broader range of his art. I'll cherish the memories I had with Herb - you can't take those away. And, you can't take away the body of work he leaves behind. Dewey - I look forward to upcoming your tribute to Herb.

I, too, was at Chuck Costas' house for his comic art gathering in March 2010 when he had Herb Trimpe come. It was a great experience meeting him outside of a convention setting where he did not have a table as a barrier. I had him sign a few of my pages, but it was truly a great experience to meet and talk to one of the early Marvel Bullpen artists who perserved through both the peaks and valleys while at Marvel. May he always Rest in Peace.

I know Herb's name because even though I was a DC fan, the other kids were Hulk fans and generally Marvel fans. There's something to be said about guys that may not be in everyone's list of favorite artists. I may be putting it harshly but it's just a fact. However, these artists turned in great work, on time. To me, that alone shows they were great professionals. And it seems anyone that knew Herb Trimpe, LOVED Herb Trimpe. If there's one thing we can learn from CAF, it's that almost every artist is someone's favorite artist. That's certainly true of Herb Trimpe. RIP Mr Trimpe. And... great picture, Dewey.
