Description

Richard Schmid is, by my lights, the most significant direct painter of the latter half of the 20th Century, and I love looking at his art. Can't believe I actually own an original, highly representative oil of a nude female sitter that he painted in the mid 70s, at the time when he began publishing books on his approach to painting figures and landscapes.

In a study like this, Schmid would go straight to the canvas with his oil paints and create the painting based on his direct observation from a model posing in his studio, without any studies or preparation for the particular scene. His books on the practice of direct painting are among the finest references for artists trying to master their craft. It was great to meet him a few years ago at one of the last (if not the last) public appearances he made before his passing.

That guy was an amazing National and International artist of fame ! I have a growing list of CD's and reference books that I study from of his work.A true fine artist of the likes of which we may never see again ! A beautiful and earlier painting by him,congrats !

Wow! This is an amazing painting by Richard Schmid! I love what you wrote about his approach to painting--Going straight to the canvas and painting the model based on direct observation. Boy that's a confident painter who can do that! Still, his results are stunnning so there must be something to it. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!
