DescriptionA major goal has been achieved! I now have a published one-page story about Sugar and Spike by Sheldon Mayer.Though not all that well known today, Sheldon is the man who pulled Superman from a stack of submittals and got him placed in Action #1. He went on to be involved in the creation and editing of much of the All-American Comics (later DC) line-up including Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash. When he stepped down as an editor, he continued as a writer and artist on a variety of DC humor books including Sugar and Spike. He worked on S&S until his eyesight failed ending with issue 98. Later, he received cataract surgery and with restored vision resumed working. He produced new S&S stories for the overseas market. Many of those stories have never been reprinted in the US. He also contributed to mainline DC line by creating The Black Orchid. This story from Sugar and Spike #93 is an excellent example of S&S stories. He we find the kids exploring the world of adults by playing a game whose rules Spike learned by observation. The results are true comedy. The Additional Images show the published page and the OA before Sheldon redid the two rightmost panels in the middle row.. The page is much improved with his patch. The dialog in the patch: Row 2, Panel 2 Spike: Then you take one of your little round wheels and go hoppity-hop over all my little round wheels! Sugar: Like this? Spike: Yup! Row 2, Panel 3 Sugar: Now what? Spike: Now you take all my little round wheels off the board! ---- I just realized that this one-page story was originally a 2-page story from Sugar and Spike #20. However, in the original, it's Spike that explains checkers to Sugar. I'll put a scan in the Additional Images when I get a copy. Social/Sharing |

Great gag and a wonderful page. Congrats. It's too bad that DC doesn't understand the gem they have both in Mayer's amazing body of work and the possibilities of the concept of Sugar and Spike in other media.

The great ink weights for each line made this cartoon work to be cute and expressive. Especially fun when the humor beats come up.
