DescriptionI’m a fan of the work of Sheldon Mayer. Though not all that well known today, Sheldon is the man who pulled Superman from a stack of submittals and got him placed in Action #1. He went on to be involved in the creation and editing of much of the All-American Comics (later DC) line-up including Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and the Justice Society of America. He is generally considered to be one of the best Editors DC ever had; he had the gift of storytelling and he had the ability to teach others how to do it in a medium that was new and different. When he stepped down as an editor, he continued as a writer and artist on a variety of DC humor books including Sugar and Spike. He worked on S&S until his eyesight failed ending the series with issue 98. Later, he received cataract surgery and with restored vision resumed working. He produced new S&S stories for the overseas market. Many of those stories have never been reprinted in the US. He also contributed to mainline DC line by creating The Black Orchid. S&S is his best-known creative work. S&S lasted 98 issues before his eyesight failed him and he had to stop drawing it. Later cateract surgery corrected his eyesight and allowed him to continue S&S stories for non-US markets. Why I bought them While S&S is his best-known creative work today, my true favorite is a character he created well before arriving at what we know as DC Comics, Scribbly, the Boy Cartoonist. Scribbly was perhaps nearer to his heart than even S&S. While S&S were inspired by his children, Scribbly was Sheldon. Created when Sheldon was 19, he used Scribbly to tell stories about what he knew best - being a boy cartoonist. The stories featured a very young Scribbly using his drawing ability to help support his family. They started in DELL comics and migrated to DC when he did. I have a soft spot for any Scribbly work that I can find. About this page I first saw this page in this auction on Nate D. Saunders' site. It was part of an entire early issue of S&S that was put up for auction by Sheldon's son Lanney. Here's the link: Sheldon Mayer Original Hand-Drawn ”Sugar and Spike” Comic Book — Complete Issue of 26 Pages From the June 1958 Issue #16 — How Sugar & Spike Met, Batman Costume for Spike & Appearance by Scribbly! Given my rather obvious enjoyment of S&S, you might wonder why I didn't buy it. The reason is simple. Read the last sentence in this write-up from Nate's site. Complete issue comprised of twenty-six pages of original ”Sugar and Spike” comic art hand-drawn by creator Sheldon Mayer, from the June 1958 issue #16. Pages include the stories ”How They Began (A Request Number)” (6 pages complete), ”Doll-Boy and the Boy Dolly” (6 pages complete), ”Pint-Size Pin-Ups” with a Batman costume for Spike (2 pages complete), ”The Picnic” (4 pages complete), ”Scribbly’s Cartoon Corner” (1 page complete), ”Spike Rebels” (6 pages complete), and ”The Eating Machine” (1 page complete). Additional copied pages for ”Play Ladder” and ”Rudy Riddles” (which weren’t drawn by Mayer) are also included. Large pages of original artwork by Mayer each measure approximately 12.5” x 21” on thick illustration paper, all with ”Comics Magazine Code Authority” approved stamp at bottom. Also with DC Comics header at top of most pages, and signed or initialed by Mayer throughout. Pages are near fine with exception of slightly larger Scribbly page which has some toning, chipping to left edge and 1.25” closed tear to right edge. From the Sheldon Mayer estate. Sold for $19,899. That $20K price is out of my range. I did consider buying it and trying to flip it, but that's too much risk for me. Apparently, it was not too much risk for someone, but cause the book is being broken up and sold by the story in the Hake's Auction. Anyway, I'm not really interested in a lot of pages from the same story because they are hard to display, but one-page stories are a weakness especially one-pagers that feature Scribbly. So, I made my max bid - not very high - and I won! Not sure that the seller did though. The average price for the book was about $770 per page. I paid just over 1/2 that. I'm pretty sure that I've seen this page or the same in a different comic. Does it ring a bell? The Additional Images other pages from the book - stats and not Mayer. Social/Sharing |

Mazel Tov to you, my friend. That's a wonderful page, and captures Mayer's sweet drawaing and humor well.
Thanks for the added context about Mayer. I always appreciate the backstory/history that goes along with this stuff we love.
