I do not own the original to this piece but I have admired it for many years. In fact, it is one of my favorite Michael Golden pieces! I have never seen it colored before, the original was printed in black and white in a fanzine called The Avengers Chronicles. I started the task of digitally coloring this piece over a year ago and only recently revisited it to finish the colors.

I showed it to Neal Adams recently while I was at his studio to get his professional critique on how I could improve the piece. We discussed how I had kept the Atlanteans in a darker color without high lights so the Avengers characters would pop more. Admittedly, it is a very busy design where characters can be lost if colored incorrectly. Within minutes of looking over the piece he suggested coloring the Atlanteans in a golden color instead. He pointed out there wasn't a lot of yellow in the lower portion of the piece so it shouldn't compete with the Avengers too much. This is one of the many reasons why he is the brilliant, experienced artist that he is! He solved the problem extremely fast, where I could have struggled with a solution and possibly never thought to go in that direction. Compare this version to the last version I posted below as see how his suggestion made a huge difference! Also, as we discussed, it is a lot easier changing colors in the computer instead of coloring it by hand where you basically have to recolor the whole piece!

Tricky piece to color, you use 'blue' on the Atlantian dudes or the water and Cap and Thor promptly vanish into the scrum. Nice choices to retain the storytelling.

One of my all time favorite Goldens as well. Wish I could get you-know-who to sell it to me. Anyway, great coloring job. Love all your choices and most of the color shadows are in the right place.
